Mary Improves her Mobility with Exercise
Ask Mary Greer about her favorite exercises, and she’ll tell you she likes to sit through them. Mary attends a chair exercise program at the Hiawatha Davis Jr. Recreation Center in north Denver. Colorado Solutions' Life Essentials program helps Mary participate by providing transportation and support during the sessions. The chair exercises she performs focus on functional fitness. “Mary has limited mobility,” Life Essentials Specialist Kelly Craighead explained. “This class helps Mary increase flexibility without risking injury.”
The low impact stretches strengthen muscles and provide cardiovascular benefits. Mary completes arm raises, pass-the-ball routines and arm circles to work her upper body and core muscles. Leg extensions, leg raises and calf raises work the lower body. The focus on both arms and legs helps Mary increase her overall strength, flexibility and balance.
One of Mary’s main goals in her exercise program is to limit the falls she’s been experiencing. “I think Mary enjoys these exercises because she feels safe doing them and healthier when she completes them. She’s also been walking more,” Kelly noted. In addition to the health benefits, Mary also added that she enjoys participating, saying simply, “it’s fun!”
