Great Opportunity for Single Moms
“I never knew this kind of job existed. When I found it, I knew it was a perfect fit.” Monica Valles is a petite, energetic single mom of two grade school aged children, Oscar, 10 and Sabrina 6. She moved to the corporate world after graduating from high school and started attending night classes to get her bachelor’s degree. “Then my Mom, who is a nurse, opened her home to a person with disabilities as a host home provider. I agreed to help her and I found the work so satisfying I decided to do it full-time myself.
Eugene Toole lives with Monica. Retired, Eugene volunteers at his church and enjoys relaxing and telling stories about his more active years. “He’s a very upbeat person, and my kids love him. He’s young at heart and becomes a part of everything we do. He’s our 'safety manager' and he makes sure everything is locked up at night.”
"This work gives me a perfect balance of having time to raise my children and do something that I’m proud to do. I have a soft spot for older people because my mom worked with the elderly while I was growing up. The key to making it work is organization and planning. I know I’m doing something to help others. Eugene goes to a program during the day, so I have time to get my own things done and get involved with my kids classes. I think they are learning from Eugene as well. I like this work so much I see myself doing it for many years to come.”
